NOW WITH TWO PAYMENT OPTIONS!
Do you have a passion for the Japanese art called sashiko? We do too, and we are excited to announce a 6-month Sashiko Club at Cottonwood lead by Blake Brenneman. Meet once a month to go over techniques and ultimately design your own experience by working with Blake on your personal project. And bonus! Make new friends who share the same passion!
The Second Saturday of each month starting in July
7/11, 8/8, 9/12, 10/10, 11/14, 12/12 11-1
Why is sashiko becoming so popular?
Sashiko is a 400 year old art form. Learning it is a journey, not a sprint. Whether or not you’ve taken an introductory class, join Blake Brenneman, a bookbinder and sashiko embroidery artist, for a half-year sashiko experience and learning opportunity. Learn thoughtful sashiko stitching, pattern drafting, and garment embellishment in an intimate, small-group setting where friends will be made and creativity will be developed. Have a designated time each month to hone your craft and deepen your skills. Draw on Blake’s dynamic knowledge base to ask questions and settle into a rhythm with your very own sashiko community.
Cottonwood's sashiko and Japanese fabrics have expanded over the last year as sashiko's popularity has exploded! Enjoy 10% off all sashiko supplies as a member of the sashiko club. And if you're a Club Cottonwood member, your discount stacks!
All skill levels are welcome to the club. It is expected that most stitchers will begin as novices to confident beginners and progress to intermediate-advanced skill levels over the course of the club. But be sure to jump in early! No new students will be admitted after the second class.
Club overview:
Months one and two - Understanding sashiko technique and construction
Month three - Drafting traditional sashiko patterns by hand
Months four, five, and six - Personal capstone project or project(s) - One large project or several small projects may be determined, based on one’s personal preference. Past student projects include an apron, denim jackets, a kimono, and zippered bags.
After the sixth month, interested students may continue their tenure in the club with additional personal projects. Sashiko is community! And Cottonwood's sashiko community is the creative spark you might need!
Spots are limited. Only fifteen seats per six-month club are available.
Required Materials:
A Sashiko kit that includes a needle, thimble, thread and sashiko panel. Or if you all have all of that, just bring your supplies!
Additional materials, such as supplies for capstone projects, will also needed to be purchased once a plan is made.
