Learn about your own sewing machine in order to become a confident sewist!  Our Beginning Sewing teacher, Nancy Wiswall, comes to you with a lifetime of sewing experience including teaching middle schoolers FACS (Family and Consumer Science) for many years! She will show you the basics of sewing and various techniques like choosing and measuring fabrics, using a rotary cutter and cutting mat and hand sewing basics.  You will create several projects including placemats, a pin cushion and a reversible tote.

Ages 12+ are welcome! Want a more robust program for your child? We have a new program called "Sewciety Kids."  Just sign up for the introductory Sewciety Kids class, and then they are eligible to take several 6-week sessions. 

For this class, you will need:

  • Sewing machine in working order with a quarter inch foot
  • Basic Sewing Thread 
  • Fabric for each project (see below)
  • Sewing machine needles
  • Bobbins
  • A quarter inch foot for your sewing machine
  • Power cord and foot pedal
  • Scissors

Fabric Requirements (purchase before class):

Tote Bag Fabric:

  • 3/4 yard each of 2 coordinating fabric

Place Mats

  • 1 /2 yard each of two coordinating fabrics
  • a small package of craft-size batting

Nancy will also add a couple of other projects throughout the four-week session.  She will tailor the projects based on what students want to make, and fabric requirements will be determined during class.  

Other Recommended Supplies:

  • 18" x 24" cutting mat or larger
  • A rotary Cutter
  • An acrylic ruler, 6 x 24" or larger

Cancellation Policy 

  • All classes require registration and prepayment. Please check our website for our full class offering.
  • Classes may be canceled for low registration or for events outside of our control (weather, etc.) - if this occurs, a full refund will be offered to any registered participants.
  • There are no refunds for class cancellations. Any cancellations made 72 hours prior to the start of the class will be offered a “class credit” valid for six (6) months. There is no guarantee that the same class will be offered, and class credits are not transferable to store credit.
  • Cancellations made less than 72 hours prior to the class start or no shows will forfeit their registration fees in their entirety.
