All materials are included and Cottonwood has dedicated Sewciety Kids sewing machines for students to use in the shop.

About the Sewciety Kids Program

Cottonwood is excited to be offering the Sewciety Kids Sewing curriculum.  This curriculum has been developed over the last 10 years by founders Megan Whitney and Meg Bulthaupt at their shop in New Jersey called Urban Sewciety.

Our newest team member, Gabi Warner, worked closely with "the two Megans" and has successfully taught many kids in New Jersey using this curriculum.  Now relocated to Maryland, Gabi is excited to be a Cottonwood team member, offering this program to Severna Park and surrounding communities. As soon as we at Cottonwood met Gabi, we recognized her passion for both sewing and teaching.

The Program takes a skill-building approach, starting with simpler projects and introducing new concepts and techniques as students progress.

Kids are exposed to all aspects of sewing including: quilting, garment sewing, accessories, embroidery, applique.  They can take classes for four years and never repeat a project!

The heart of the Sewciety Kids Program is After-School Classes. Students first take this Beginner Workshop to learn the basics of the sewing machine and will make a small project.  Then they are eligible to enroll in the Level One Sewciety Kids Curriculum classes and any other classes geared toward kids that we offer at Cottonwood.

The first level-one class session that we will offer in October will be the Stacked Up Pillow (photo included in this listing). Dates and Times TBD

A word from Gabi:

Hi, my name is Gabi! I've been sewing for about 10 years, and can usually be found in my "Thanks, I made it!" clothes. My sewing experience is equal parts self-taught and professionally guided. I believe this gives me the unique skills to solve almost any problems that a student may encounter, while still helping them create a polish project.

I've taught a few other different skillsets before finding my true passion - teaching kids how to sew. Some of my favorite joys in teaching are watching students grow more confident in themselves through good practices. Also, finding pride in the creations they make. Even though the projects are the same, the fabric and design choices are uniquely them!
